What are some of the most painful and/or cruel deaths in all of history?
I warn sensitive people before reading this.
What happened in my country right after the second world war is an unforgivable crime that stains my country's past.
The picture above shows but a few of the victims of the after war killings on Slovenian soil. The reason I think this was the most cruel death is because these braided hairs belonged to innocent unknown women that were thrown and walled off into a mass grave inside a mining shaft which housed over 400 dead men, women and children.
Not much is known about these women, but the little evidence found showed them to be still alive.
A person can’t imagine the horror and the smell. These women were walled off in a mine shaft because after 3 months of the smell off 400+ decomposing bodies was unbearable and all the evidence had to be hidden. They were the unfortunate innocents that the partisans deemed traitors.
Two shafts were first filled with victims who died of falling, then a horizontal shaft was stocked in eight more layers of bodies.
When they could not fit any more they waited for the bodies to decompose a little to get extra space.
But the smell forced them to first build a brick wall. That is when the women were thrown in.
After that a concrete 1.5 m thick wall.
And after that 8.5 m thick wall.
In total there were 11 walls, the kind of a smell and fear that forces a man to build 11 walls. The front of the shaft was manually collapsed.
Now imagine the dark and the smell of bodies decomposing for three months.
The lack of air.
And the critters that feasted on the bodies.
Total silence except the cries of other women.
The sound of more bricks.
Laughing voices on the other side.
Their last moments must have been hell…
The injustices done after the wars should not be swept under the rug—injustices like Srebrenica or this horrible act.
I think this event is the most cruel death because it shows humanity's capability for cruelty in the name of injustice.
Note : I am incredibly surprised at how many views this post received . It makes me happy that the story reached such a large audience.
I would also like to thank the quora community for helping me with the nice edits . I have noticed a lot of confusion about some things that were not mentioned in the post , but were answered in the comment section .
Most of the remains belonged to Croatian men , but there were over 100 bodies that belonged to women and children. After the war was over, the men/women (took their families with them ) - who helped the Nazis, fled to Austria in fear of their own people and what they would do to them. They wanted to give themselves up to the British, but they were rejected and sent back to Croatia in trains.
The Slovenian partisans stopped these trains and loaded them into trucks like wood. The men were beaten and women raped, then they were forced to strip off all clothes and robed of valuables.
Usually the partisans lined them up and shot them in the head. In some cases, like in barbaric pit they would be thrown into deep shafts to splatter. Mostly the bodies were sprinkled with ash and dirt to disguise the smell.
After the bodies were disposed of, they would usually cover the deeds up with threats. The mass graves were empty off personal belongings as to avoid identification in case off discovery.
When they run out of space in bomb craters, they reserved mine shafts, when those filled up it was time for naturally formed caves and abyss.
There were no official orders for this, just a bunch of bloodthirsty monsters, using ranks and threats.
The Barbara pit was known to be there since the start, the residents of the Huda jama(village near the shaft)saw and witnessed the victims being dragged and beaten and truck after truck arrive and leave in the night. After 3 months the smell reached the vilage and the water run dirty and foul smelling for 7 months after the walls were put in.
But the Yugoslavian law would jail you for life and make you dissappear if you even mentioned mass graves.
In 2009 the mass grave was discovered and everyone was shocked speechless. The government quickly shushed it up and closed the case (i am not going to say it out loud, but everyone knows why).
To this day the remains are still in that shaft in fruit baskets, waiting to be properly buried. The responsible ones, that are still jail able are still free and nothing is being done about it…like it never happened.
The one thing that was done ,was to have a memorial chapel built and even then it was defaced with writings of “Traitor”.
Never let things be forgotten even for a moment, many want that, but the dead can’t speak.. WE CAN.
Note : English is my second language so I am sorry if the sentences were malformed and the grammar horrible.
