What if ants are actually intelligent, and have things like markets in their cities where they trade their foods, and they have languages that are incomprehensible to humans, and they know the location of other ant colonies and make pilgrimages to them every now and then sort of like how humans travel to different cities? and like, maybe some of these cities form empires, and there are millions of empires of ant colonies around the world, and these ants engage in ant politics and form organized professional militaries n stuff. maybe this was the most grand ant city in ant history, and you just turned it into antlantis

There is an estimate population of 321,035,624,829,901,000 ants in the world. So not a big deal to kill just one colony for scientific research.

All you dumbasses complaining about these ants being killed, this was an ABANDONED ant hill. There's no conclusion as to what happened to them. Even if they were killed, the number of ant populations to humans is tremendous, so killing one ant pile makes no damn difference in nature. You guys feeling sympathy for them is like upsetting over a squashed cockroach. If anything, there are actually over 280 different species of ants that can LITERALLY kill you. To promote their survival based only on this is incredibly ignorant. You guys should just fucking chill out. Be glad that this grand colony didn't go to waste and was used to improve our understanding about them. Like everything else, if studies like these weren't done, we would have never known.

Can you imagine just chilling in the subway when suddenly you're flooded with cement, given no way out. And then as your last breath is took you slowly sink into a pitch black world filled with thick liquid that slowly hardens and restricts your movement. The earth around you becomes so thick that all you're left with is a tiny little circle to move wiggle in because of all the thrashing you did to try and survive? Then you have to suffocate surrounded by the screams and bodies of your friends and family. Next time before you study an anthill, use the God damn molten metal.

They feel pain and just like us, All work together to accomplish a goal. A goal to keep their family safe, Their brothers and sisters. Just because we don't know what they're thinking doesn't mean they don't think at all.// @Zyzarda: Except ants don't have a concept of self nor do they feel pain. For people who are worried about ants, lets get this straight: they're ants. They have little to nothing of a brain. They can't even feel pain. Ants, like all insects, have very simple sensory receptors on their outer bodies because they are covered with an exoskeleton. They sense their surroundings through sensory hairs instead of the nerve endings in our skin that signal stretching of the elastic skin tissue. This means that ants do NOT feel pain like we do. Even if you puncture the exoskeleton the ant may not be aware of it at all. Ants also don't have the ability to have emotions such as sadness, mourning, anger, etc. Humans are curious beings, and I find it fascinating to see how ants work together to build something so complex. It's kind of hard to understand the structure of an anthill since it crumbles to the touch and is underground. There are still countless numbers of ants. Studies even show that the weight of all the ants in the world would be nearly equal to the weight of all of the humans in the world. Please stop fretting over mindless creatures that have consist of a countless amount of organisms.
